Peter Rabbit vs. Mr. MacGregor

Well - we were finally able to head outside after many days of rain, and boy were we excited.  Our Garden Project has gone on for a while.  We planted sunflower seeds a while back but rain and mud kept us from monitoring them.  Today that all changed...

After heading out to the Garden Area we read the story, "Peter Rabbit".  Most of the children had never heard of dear Peter, but they soon became enthralled with the story.  Take a look...

After reading the story our adventure began.  I asked where the children thought they might find Peter.  One child remembered he lived in the hollowed out part of an old tree, so we began searching.  Some believe this might be the place (see below)...

Next, we wanted to know how Peter may have gotten into the garden.  Another child remembered he squeezed through the gate.  We found one gate open.  It was discussed and finally determined that Peter had it easy in this garden - the gate was left open, so no squeezing was required (see below)!  Notice the expression of disgust on one fellow's face.  He reminded everyone to "shut the gate next time".

After wandering around, one child found "proof" that Peter had been present...a half-eaten carrot.  Oh my!

As our garden adventure continued, we began to realize that both Peter and Mr. MacGregor were absent.  Perhaps they were doing errands now that the sun was shining.  One student suggest Mr. MacGregor was making vegetable soup for his lunch, and another suggested Peter was picking blackberries with Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton-Tail.  Who Knows?  But we did see that Mr. MacGregor left something behind...

But...as we were making our way to our own part of the garden (where we planted our seeds) we spotted something - a big hole (see below)!  I asked the kids what they thought lived there.  Some said "Peter!" while others stated "a Troll!".  There's never a dull moment in early childhood education.

Wondering about our sunflower seeds?  Check back Monday...I share pictures then.  Until then - enjoy Peter Rabbit!

This Is A Gooey Situation

Beware:  "This is a gooey situation. "  These are the exact words used by a child today when watching others use a colorful slime concoction.
Aside from a typical "teacher store" the Dollar Store is one of my favorite places to buy fun, educational materials for my kids.  I found this blue slime recently and knew the kids would love it.
Each child who experienced the slime mentioned how it felt cold, slimy, goopy, wet, and hard to hold.  We had such rich conversations about words they could use to describe the substance.  For some children, this was a lesson in new vocabulary.  For others, it was an age-appropriate lesson in adjectives!

On a side note...the weather today is sunny and lovely.  We made a quick trip to our School Garden.  Tomorrow's weather looks great, too, and we hope to complete our anticipated "Peter Rabbit" project!

Bring It Inside!

When the weather outside won't cooperate, bring the experience indoors!  It's been raining for nearly a week with very little relief.  Our Gardening Projects haven't been what I'd hoped, so I made sure the kids could experience a bit of sunshine while in the classroom.

Bring in some small pots, artificial flowers, and a play watering can, and see what the kids do.  I included some playdough to put in the bottom on the flower pots so the flowers would stick upright.  The kids loved it!  Remember...we had been discussing gardening but didn't really have the chance to experience it - yet.

We also wanted to get a bit dirty, so we filled the Sensory Table with potting soil.  The opportunity to wear gardening gloves was probably the most popular part of this Play Area today!

What made me smile was listening to the kids talk about the parts of the flower.  They remembered the roots grow under the soil, the stem pops up next, then come the leaves and flower bed.

Ah...life is good when I can discuss the simple, beautiful things with little ones!

Later this week when the weather clears we will read Peter Rabbit, then search for him in our very own school garden!  Watch for updates!

Here we go!

Well, here is my first blog.  About a week ago I started a Facebook Page for early childhood educators.  At this page I'll share tidbits, projects, pictures, stories, and so much more.

I love speaking and presenting educational materials to teachers.

Check back often!
